Education,
Knowledge and Intelligence Those are three of the most confusing terms in general. Most people interchange them without being aware of the semantics involved. Let’s see some of the definitions for each of the terms. Education: 1 a: the action or process of educating or of being educated; also : a stage of such a process b: the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process <a person of little education> 2: the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools Knowledge: obsolete : cognizance 2 a (1): the fact or condition of knowing something with
familiarity gained through experience or association (2): acquaintance with or understanding of a science,
art, or technique b (1): the fact or condition of being aware of something (2): the range of one's information or understanding <answered to the best of my knowledge> c: the circumstance or condition of apprehending truth
or fact through reasoning : cognition d: the fact or condition of having information or of
being learned <a person of unusual knowledge> 3 archaic : sexual
intercourse 4 a: the sum of what is known : the body of truth, information, and principles
acquired by humankind b archaic : a branch of learning Intelligence: 1 a (1): the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reason; also : the skilled use of reason (2): the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests) b Christian Science : the basic eternal quality of divine Mind c: mental acuteness : shrewdness2 a: an intelligent entity; especially : angel b: intelligent minds or mind <cosmic intelligence>3: the act of understanding : comprehension 4 a: information, news b: information concerning an enemy or possible enemy or an area; also : an agency engaged in obtaining such information 5: the ability to perform computer functions We can see very clearly that although these terms appear similar they are in fact quite different. Let’s pick one of the similar definitions and see where the differences are. Education is the knowledge and
development resulting from an educational
process. Knowledge is the fact or condition of knowing something with
familiarity gained through experience or association and Intelligence is the
ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment. We can see the
difference using just this particular definition. In one case knowledge is
actually part of two of the definitions. So Knowledge itself is a part of
Education and of Intelligence. That makes Knowledge an item in itself. If we
then take a look at the other two we find that one is a static term while the
other is dynamic. In other words, Intelligence uses Knowledge, while
Education is static Knowledge. I hope that clears up a bit of the differences in the terms. |
